I Was Running Late

May 22, 2016 Marcie Scudder

I was running late - y'know.
Always thinking I needed to be some where...at some pre-appointed time.
Remnants of an old life. Not this one I live today.

The birds were singing.
I stopped to listen.

The grass was greening.
I wanted  - only- to watch it grow.

The sun was rising.
I wished to bask in its warmth.

And then -  there was this.
One of life's most precious of miracles.

She didn't look like her mother...but I knew who she was.
I've watched her father grazing right here in just these pastures.
No question or doubt - she was his.

I was running late. For sure.
And - right there with the birds...and the grass...and the sun...and this newborn baby - I didn't care.

Those were old voices.
That was a different time.
This is where I am.
In these mountains. With these gentle souls.
Today.
