May 2008

While busy preparing for and celebrating my daughter's wedding - I thought it a good opportunity to re-turn and re-visit some of my favorite May images from years past. To those of you who have been with me for awhile - they may look familiar.
To those of you who are newer to joining me on this journey - enjoy!

I Watched

There are few events in nature - more beautiful - than birth. And no greater gift than that of quiet observation...of witnessing and seeing for the first time.

On this mother's day - I watched as this Mama Goose became a mother. I watched as she hatched her baby chicks. One at a time. Slowly.

I watched as she shifted her weight from one hip to another...making and holding space. I watched as one head then another popped itself up.

Hello world - I'm here.

I watched as the Papa goose stood watch over me. Protecting and guarding.

I watched as the little ones leaned into their Mama....and their Mama leaned back. Each one needing the other one more.

I watched as the nest emptied. I watched as they dipped their tender toes for the first time. I watched as they swam away.

There could have been no gift as precious...or as special. What a perfect way to honor and celebrate this day.

I watched.

For Ten - I'm Grateful

I've been watching this mother warming her nest for weeks now. I've admired her dedication...her patience...her quiet and steadfast determination. No thing could move or distract her. No thing could deter her. Her only purpose was this.

Ten hungry mouths to feed. Ten pairs of feet to wash. Ten sets of wings that will be wanting to fly. Ten babies - all at once and at the same time.

And suddenly - I'm grateful. Grateful that my three arrived in good order and one at a time. Grateful for mothers and sisters and daughters and sons.

Grateful that they survived. Grateful that they arrived.

Grateful for my strong body that gets me here each day. Grateful for my eyes that see....and my heart that opens to it. Grateful for nature's abiility to renew and restore....to reproduce and carry itself on - one generation and then another.

Grateful for all ten - all at once and the same time.

Grateful for brave mother's everywhere.

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!!!
